The Central High School Falcons hosted a quad volleyball match Monday at home in Paddock Lake.
This was the last official home match for the three seniors Mike Michelau, Sam Picchietti and Eric Spangler.
Teams from Central, Waukesha West (West), Muskego and Wauwatosa East (East) participated.
In the first match Central outasted Waukesha West 25 – 19 and had a rousing come from behind 25 – 23. Down 23-20 Central scored the last five on great defense by Michelau and Spangler with blocking by Brooks Gahart, Picchietti and Spangler with hitting help from Caleb Mobile. Central played Tosa East in second match. Tosa and Central both made the state tourney in 2010. Central took set 1, 25 – 22. Falcons were led by sophomore Glenn Karsten with 3 critical blocks for points to put the game away. In set 2 Central ran away with a 25 -13 win with Brent Larsen serving out the last 6 points of the game. After the Tosa match Coach Wayne Schultz mentioned that Cental play was encouraging because they competed at a high level against #4 East and #5 West ranked teams in the WIAA rankings. He credited Michelau and Mobile with hard consistent serving and deep floats by Gahart and Stetson keeping teams out of their offense. In the 3rd match versus Muskego, Central won 25 – 22 with more good team play after a rough middle part of the set. In the 2nd Falcons went out to a quick lead and after some late sloppy defense, they prevailed 25 – 23 to finish undefeated in the quad. Coach Schultz commented after the quad, “I am getting the lineup set for the upcoming postseason play and with the solid play of two of the best outsides in Mobile and Michelau we seem ready for another long run in the tourney.
