Units responding to report of car in river

At about 7:39 a.m., Salem Fire/Rescue and sheriff’s deputies are responding to a  report of a crash in the 10700 block of Highway W (Fox River Road), Wilmot.

Dispatch reports that car left the road and went over the embankment on the Fox River side.

UPDATE 7:42 a.m. — Dispatch reports that there are two injuries, a possible broken arm and a head injury. Both people out of vehicle. Second ambulance dispatched.

UPDATE 7:43 a.m. — Deputy reports that vehicle, a mini-van, is in the river. He says road will have to be shot down to pull vehicle out when tow truck arrives.

UPDATE 7:46 a.m. — Deputy shutting down southbound traffic on Highway W at Highway F.

UPDATE 8:16 a.m. — Deputy asks dispatch to report oil slick floating down river from vehicle to DNR.

UPDATE from accident report — A 63-year old Salem man was driving northbound on Highway W north of 111th Street. Driver said vehicle drifted onto right shoulder and he was unable to steer it back onto road. Vehicle traveled about 150 feet on shoulder before hitting a tree. It rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise, coming to rest facing west in the river. The driver and a 55-year-old female passenger were both transported from the scene for medical treatment. The driver was cited for operating a motor vehicle without liability insurance.
