Wheatland to overlay 52nd Street

The Wheatland Town Board has voted to overlay with a thin asphalt layer 52nd Street between Highway K and 368th Avenue.

The board — at Monday’s Town Board meeting — accepted a bid of about $62,000 from B.R. Amon for the work, which is about a mile in length.

The board considered also overlaying 368th Avenue between 55th and 31st streets. B.R. Amon’s bid for that work would have been an additional $108,000. But Supervisor Robert Herda suggested having the work done on 52nd Street this year and evaluating the new thin overlay process before doing additional roads, an idea Supervisor Andrew Lois supported. Ultimately the vote to proceed with only the 52nd Street work was unanimous.

Town engineer Len Roecker explained that with tighter municipal budgets, paving companies have been coming up with less expensive paving alternatives. The work will carry a three-year warranty, but Roecker estimated it could last as much as nine years.

Two companies bid on the work, with B.R. Amon’s bid almost 30 percent less expensive.
