Lakewood “Stride into Summer” coverage

Lakewood School hosted the Striding into Summer 5K race Saturday morning with about 100 runners and walkers.

The proceeds from the event are to go toward the purchase a digital display sign for the school.

The event was organized by two first year teachers at the school — Molly Morton and Emily Dutton. The pair said the turnout for the event exceeded their expectations.

“We thought it was great,” said Morton, who is Lakewood’s band and strings director.

“We were hoping for around 50,” added Dutton, a 4K teacher at the school.

Also among the participants were five fellow educators from Antioch who heard about the event and wanted to support Lakewood’s efforts.

“We all decided to come and run,” said Brendan Frank, a band director in Antioch (Ill.) School District 34.

Participants followed a route that began and ended at the school after making its way north and then east to Legion Park and back to the school. Runers and walkers were then able to enjoy some post 5K refreshments.
