Silver Lake committee raising money for fireworks

A citizens committee is working to raise money to bring fireworks back to the annual Firefighters Festival this summer.

The major effort right now is a metal recycling drive. Drop-off dates for material will be:

  • Thursday, June 9 from 5 to 9 p.m.
  • Friday, June 10 from 3 to 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, June 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The drop off point is at the old lumber company barn next to the Rescue Squad Building

The Village of Silver Lake Citizens Events Committee is looking to raise $3,000. If it can meet that goal, a fireworks company has been found to do a show in conjunction with the Firefighters Festival, to be held this year on July 15 and 16. The money has to be raised by July 1.

The village in the past had funded fireworks from tax revenues, but has not due to tight budgets for the last few years.

Even before the metal drive, the committee already has some money in hand from donations.

“When people heard about this and trying to raise money for fireworks, we received $350 in cash donations,” said Mary Albrecht, a member of the committee who reported on its progress at Wednesday’s Village Board meeting.

Some local businesses, such as Silver Lake Auto and Silvertown Mall, have also pledged to donate equipment to the effort, Albrecht said.

A flyer with more information — including some idea of acceptable materials — is available here.

Leave it to Silver Lake to wait until the last possible minute to decide to do this. How about a little more than a month’s notice? Last I checked, July didnt just happen to be added to the calendar. Its there, every year. Right after June.

Here’s an idea, lets scrap one of the three squad cars we have. How many police do we really need?

We could have recylced the metal from one of the cars that the fire dept uses for training, how about recycling all the beer cans from last years festival? Put that money into a fund.

This town’s government is a joke.

This has been going on for weeks, just this website didn’t announce it until today. Last I checked, WestOfTheI.com wasn’t the official announcement outlet for Silver Lake.

And beer cans from last year? You got a time machine laying next to your Chicago Bears shrine? But seriously, knocking the police that we have?? Let me guess, you’re an Illinois import who’s friends won’t come to see you because they claim that Silver Lake is just one big speed trap…. Cogswell isn’t the frickin tollway, and I know I’m not the only one happy to have a 25mph speed limit throughout town. I’d rather have my kids safe than more FIB’s up here visiting you, while driving 40 in a 25.

Dear annoyed: Silver Lake citizens are volunteering their time, effort and energy to get something nice done for the community and our Volunteer Fire Dept. The board facilitated this only and NO tax dollars are being used. Knowing who you probably are, I doubt that you have anything nice to say about anything positive that might happen with this current board or our police dept. But they will succeed despite your sour attitude on life and people. I feel sorry for you. Maybe if YOU volunteered for something positive like this you may see what it is like to be happy.
