Wilmot Union High School officials believe that senior Cara Dowell will be the first graduate from the school to attend Harvard University.

And Dowell is going to the school, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in style. She is the recipient of a renewable $51,000 scholarship, she recently learned.

Wilmot hosted a press event Wednesday to announce the scholarship.

Dowell will be studying math at Harvard, the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States and one of the most prestigious.

Attending Harvard was not a long-term ambition for Dowell, she said, but rather something she decided to pursue fairly recently.

“I figured I would apply just for the heck of it,” Dowell said.

She first visited her future college in October, when she also checked out the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

She much preferred the atmosphere at Harvard.

“The Harvard yard, it was just magical,” Dowell said.
