Mike Faber, one of Silver Lake’s Community Library Board members, on Wednesday night urged village residents to use the branch in Silver Lake.
Use of all three branches — in Salem, Silver Lake and Twin Lakes – is being reviewed currently, Faber said. If the Silver Lake branch does not show enough use, it might be closed, he said in spontaneous comments at the end of the regular Village Board meeting.
“In the future we may lose (the local branch) if there’s not enough usage,” Faber said. “We don’t want to lose it.”
The Community Library system is made up of five municipalities — Salem, Silver Lake, Twin Lakes, Randall and Paddock Lake.
Recent changes to hours at the Silver Lake facility, 729 Cogswell Drive, were made with an eye to increasing usage, Fabe said. Silver Lake branch hours, as of May 2, are:
- Monday 4 to 8 p.m.
- Tuesday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Wednesday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Thursday 4 to 8 p.m.
- Friday Closed
- Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Sunday Closed
I agree, the library should be used more, but, there is a problem with this. They are closed on Fridays and Sundays. My kids try to go, and its closed. They are bored on rainy Sundays, and fortunately, they love to read. Unfortunately, they can not utilize the library. Plus, the new location, as nice as it is, really is a killing point for the library. Right off the main drag. A lot of younger kids may not be able to access it without their parents driving them there. I understand the great deal they were presented with after the issues with the old location. There are enough vacant bldg’s in downtown Silver Lake, that should be better utilized. That puts me on a whole other complaint path.
I have long thought that school buses after school should have the library on a route
so a kid COULD be dropped off there to study.
As with any kid in the library, proper decorum would be necessary.
And cof course, it might have to be a registered program.
I can imagine that some of our kids DONT have computers and the library does.
Or printers and the library does. And high speed at that.
This wont help those over the weekend but it would for the branches that have hours after school..
Once when i brainstormed this, i was told by a library employee that they wouldnt ‘go for it because they dont want to be babysitters’…not so sure the idea should have been stopped with that casual, un-vetted comment. It wouldnt be much different that a kid WALKING from Salem grade to the library… I still think it is a good idea…more positive for the student than the library.
I pay taxes for the school library and the community library.. I’d like to see them open for all…with more hours.. more CONSISTANT hours.
I agree.
Nevermind that if more than 3 vehicles were to show up at the library, they would have no where to park.
It would also be nice if they checked their book return box on a regular basis. My daughter was late by one day, and had to pay extra fee’s because the next day they were closed, and then got charged for the day after as well, when they finally pulled the books out.
At least in Salem they have a crosswalk and stop light. We have every non local whose car cant do 25 thru town.
Terrible location, no parking, no bike rack, next to it is a very loud boat repair business. No thanks I’ll go to Salem.
I remember the old Silver Lake library. It was always open, and always accessible. It was a great place. Did anyone on the board think about the hours? Maybe that has something to do with usage? I see a problem with the fact that I would only be available to visit two of those days at those hours, and thats only if I’m not busy doing more things around the house. I would love to use the library. But, you have to make it more convienent, or we’ll just keep going to Salem. Ohhh yeah, the parking issue…Yeah, thats pretty bad. And as far as having a bus route there, that route would never work because of the hours, unless of course you want kids standing by the door waiting to get in at 4pm.
to serve the users. If the kids arrive at 3, then the library should be open before 3. There was the comment about ‘registration’, probably to make sure that the building would be opened and the bus drivers knew it to be correct to drop them off. I see it having to be a community effort – llibrary, students, parents and school co-operative.
Each group is so singular. We are in a world that excels when it co-operates. I dont see anything at the library being co-operative – from the cat all the way to the municipal leaders. Its a job. Just a job. I dont foresee much change. Go to Salem, You’ll bump up their numbers.
