The Silver Lake Village Board approved the hiring of two part-time water patrol officers for this boating season.
The officers will start May 13 and will be paid $18.37 per hour.
During discussion on the motion the following financials for the program last year were discussed:
- Total cost: about $21,000.
- Reimbursement of costs by Department of Natural Resources: about $17,000.
Trustee Michael Decker had asked during the discussion if the village was obligated to patrol the lake. The question was not addressed. Decker abstained from voting on the motion.
Trustee Chris Willkomm voted against the hiring. He had expressed some wariness about counting on the DNR funds.
“We all know how the state has been whacking,” Willkomm said. “We may not get anything.”
Last year, the village hired three officers, said Trustee Barbara Ironside, chairman of the police and Judicial Committee, but only two were needed this year.
