Crash at Highways 50 and 83/75 takes out traffic light

At about 4:46 p.m., I came across a crash on Highway 83 at Highway 50 (Brass Ball Corners), Paddock Lake.

I could see one car being prepared to be towed. The traffic signal mounted on the Highway 83 south median had been knocked down.

The signal at the center of this image from Google Maps Streetview is the one that was knocked over in the above crash. /Google Maps

With this crash and all the recent, and more occurring crashes reported at intersections such as HWY 45 & C, Hwy 45 & 50, Hwy C & MB all the more reason to support the additions of Roundabouts.

maybe if people learned how to pay attention when they drive, that might be a bigger help…

  3. Roundabouts are a joke! says:

Wes- Roundabouts at 45/50 and 45/C?!?! What are you talking about? Do you have any idea how much traffic flows through those intersections? Accidents happen, more attentive driving could help but roundabouts?!?! Thanks for making me laugh today, I appreciate it!

  4. Wes says:

Yes I have a very good idea how much traffic flows through those interesections. I live close to both of them and here the sirens quite often. Sure more attentive driving would help and so would less people trying to run yellow/red lights but I don’t think that’s going to happen any time soon. A couple of things you need to keep in mind. When an accident at an intersection happens one car usually t-bones another. With a Roundabout that won’t normally happen. Another thing is that traffic flow never has to stop. A bad thing, no I don’t think so. Most would think that’s a good thing. Think it through. Here are a couple of interesting facts from another state that went to Modern Roundabouts.

90 percent reduction in fatal crashes
75 percent reduction in injury crashes

Sorry you think this is something to laugh about but people being hurt and killed is not a laughing matter………

Wes- “Sorry you think this is something to laugh about but people being hurt and killed is not a laughing matter………”

Of course accidents aren’t a laughing matter, roundabouts at an uncontrolled county intersection could work, but not at the interesections you mentioned.

The laughter you brought to me earlier was about where you recommend to implement these roundabouts!

Actually if you do just a little research you’ll see where Modern “Multi Lane” Roundabouts have been built in many areas in the country at intersections comparable to the ones I’ve mentioned, yes even Hwy 50 & Hwy 45. It’s pretty simple, traffic slows, merges into the circle and continues exiting where desired. Even two or three lanes of traffic can handle this. Not quite sure why you think it couldn’t work??

  7. Patrick says:

Wes who do think is going to pay for all these changes??? The state is broke.
