The Salem town government has issued the following statement declaring a snow emergency:
Due to the impending winter storm, the Town of Salem has declared a snow emergency beginning today, Monday, Jan. 31, at noon, extending through noon on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011.
A winter storm warning has been issued for the Salem area. The National Weather Service has predicted the total accumulation of snow fall during this period to be between 12 and 20 inches. Significant blowing and drifting snow and blizzard conditions are possible.
Travel during a declared snow emergency should be restricted to only that which is absolutely necessary. Snow plows are more effective and efficient when there are no cars on the roads. All parking on public ways is prohibited. Any motor vehicle parked on a public way in violation of the snow emergency parking ban is subject to being towed.
Residents are also reminded to shovel their sidewalks and not to push the snow into the street. Pushing snow into the street is illegal. Residents who shovel their driveways should place the snow to the right of the driveway when facing the road. This can reduce the effect of having driveways “plowed in.â€
