Salem residents to bring old TV shows to radio theater format this Saturday

With a snap of a finger and twist of a nose, WGTD Radio Theater will bring two of television’s most beloved magical comedies to the airwaves and in front of a live studio audience 11:15 a.m. Sept. 25 on 91.1 WGTD.

WGTD Radio Theater’s 91.1 Players will revisit “Bewitched” and “I Dream of Jeannie” with brand-new radio comedies to be performed at Gateway’s Center for Bioscience and Information Technology, 3520-30th Ave. Kenosha.

WGTD Radio Theater co-executive producers and Salem residents Steve Brown and Mike Ullstrup have written the pair of new radio plays with the same comedic style and repartee of the original series.

“These were two competing ‘supernatural’ comedy series on television that aired at about the same time,” said Ullstrup. “We are really excited to finally bring the two shows together, for the first time.”

In the new script for “Bewitched,” Samantha’s family – including Endora, Uncle Arthur and Aunt Clara – cause their usual pandemonium for Darrin and Samantha. Thom Powers plays Darrin, Jill Jensen plays Samantha, Rene Thomas plays Endora, Cameron Spencer plays Uncle Arthur, Vittoria Dumez plays Aunt Clara.

In “I Dream of Jeannie,” Jeannie (Kathy Zuhlke) helps U.S. astronaut Tony Nelson (Andrew Potter) with his wish to be on the International Space Station.

Both of these episodes will be directed by Don Jensen, who is also the host/narrator. Other 91.1 Players Terry Lawler, Glyn Garside and Mary Isley also appear in these comedy classics.

Audience members are welcome and admission is free. The audience should arrive by 10:45 a.m. In addition to being aired over WGTD, the program will also be streamed live online at WGTD.org. WGTD can be heard in Racine and Kenosha counties at 91.1 FM, in the Elkhorn area at 101.7 FM, and in the Lake Geneva area at 103.3 FM.

Food and beverages will be available at Café 91.1, a full-service coffeehouse located in the atrium of the building. For more information, contact Steve Brown, (262) 813-0144, or David Cole, (262) 564-3030.
