The Salem Town Board has endorsed the Camp and Center Lakes Rehabilitation District pursuing ownership and rehabilitation of the Center Lake outlet dam that apparently has no legal owner right now.
Supervisor Dennis Faber, who lives on Camp Lake, explained that the district is willing to take on the rehabilitation and ownership of the orphaned dam, but that it was looking for some assurance from the town that it would not interfere at a later date. By state statue, he said, dam issues are between the dam owner and the state Department of Natural Resources.
The motion to endorse the CCLRD’s action passed 3 to 1, with Supervisor Patrick O’Connell absent.
Chairman Linda Valentine said she voted against the motion because there is no established no-wake height for the lake.
The lake district sought — and received — similar endorsement from the county.
“The Kenosha County Department of Planning and Development supports this proposal and believes that the CCLRD would be the logical choice to own and manage the Center Lake Dam,” said a Sept. 3 letter to the district chairman from Daniel Treloar, conservation planner for Kenosha County.
