The Randall Town Board has given its approval for the Fire Department to begin a cadet program.
Firefighter Dennis Raupp told the board Thursday that the program would be designed to create the “next generation” of local firefighters.
The program would operate under the auspices of Boy Scouts of America and be formed as an Explorer post. It would be open to boys and girls aged 14
The goal will be to prepare the cadets to be ready to take a firefighter 1 exam when they turn 18. That’s the youngest age a firefighter can be in Wisconsin.
“What this is doing is getting them prepared …,” Raupp said.
The program already has five individuals interested in joining.
The Bloomfield and Salem fire departments have or have had similar programs, Raupp said.
The Town Board seemed to be very much in favor of the program and the vote to approve it was unanimous.
“I think it’s just a wonderful program for the youth,” said Supervisor Rose Nolan. “It’s a calling to do this.”
