Daily Quack: Historical society to have displays at the fair

The Western Kenosha County Historical Society will be at the Kenosha County Fair with several displays and activities for fair goers to enjoy.

The society has added a few new things to Show ‘N ‘Tell! One is a hands on Ice Harvesting Tools display to compliment the group’s video and wall display. Another is a display marking the 90th anniversary of the Kenosha County Fair. This year, Salem, Brass Ball and Paddock Lake will be featured in picture boards.

And of course the calendars of years ago remain with new additions.

The historical society also will also host a WHOamI? program. The society has images from the Central and Wilmot high schools, Trevor Grade School and from various County Fairs. The society is asking for help in identifying some of the people in the images. Are you in any of these images? If you are, the historical society hopes you will be able to help on others that they have. All are invited to come and sit a little while and lend your knowledge.

Yet another display debut will be a model train layout of the Trevor stock yards and Trevor station. The Trevor yards were necessary to rest and recouperate livestock for 24 hours before they crossed the Illinois state line as they traversed the SOO Rail line. After the animals reloaded the trains, their net stop would be the Chicago Stock yards. Some animals were pastured outside of the stock yards and would have been a cash business for our farmers – one cent per day per sheep.

The Kenosha County Fair will run this year from Wednesday, Aug. 18 to Sunday, Aug. 22.
