Salem 4K registration exceeds expectations

This is a view of one of the two brand new classrooms at Salem School that will house 4- year -old kindergarten.

Salem School has 88 students registered for its first year of 4-year-old kindergarten, district officials said this week.

“It surprised us,” School Board President Shane Gerber aid while talking with reporters after this week’s School Board meeting. “We’re very pleased.”

The program was approved by the board in March to start with the 2010-11 school year. It will be held in classrooms especially outfitted for teh program in the school’s recent expansion.

School officials have been touting the program for academic benefits, but also for financial benefits. Because it increases student population, 4K will eventually increase state aid to the district.
