Silver Lake grass rig has a new home

The Silver Lake Fire Department's recently sold grass rig.

The Silver Lake Fire Department’s old 1969 Dodge “grass rig” has a new home.

The department has been working on selling the truck since early this year. The truck was originally designed to fight small-scale fires, like grass fires, but subsequently has been replaced by more modern and versatile equipment. The rig was being stored in the Rescue Squad building.

The department had the truck appraised and started to put out feelers to possible interested buyers, when a buyer with long history with the department and plenty of automotive know-how stepped forward.

Carl Schultz, co-founder of Five Star Race Car Bodies in Twin Lakes, purchased the vehicle for $5,000, said village Trustee Richard Maron, who also is a member of the fire department.

Schultz once was a Silver Lake firefighter, as were his father and grandfather, Maron said.

“He’s real happy with it,” Maron said about Schultz and the purchase.
