Twin Lakes’ village government has issued the following press release regarding the beginning of the Main Street Reconstruction project:
Construction on the Main Street Reconstruction Project is expected to begin on Monday, June 14, 2010. After posting of detour signage and other preparations, the contractor is expected to begin underground utility work by the end of the week. The section of Main Street in downtown Twin Lakes will be closed to vehicle traffic for the duration of the project, which is expected to be complete by the end of October. Municipal Parking Lots in the area will be open and accessible for access to downtown businesses and pedestrian access to the businesses will be maintained at all times.
The Village began working on plans to rehabilitate Main Street and parts of North and South Lake Avenue in the downtown area in conjunction with a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District established in 2008. The project was initially shelved due to insufficient revenue projected in the TIF District. In 2009, the Village received two grants through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) in the total amount of $1 million to assist in funding the first of that work on the block of Main Street between the North/South Lake Avenue and Burden Avenue intersections. The intersections will also be rebuilt in the project.
The project involves nearly complete rehabilitation of the Right of Way area from sidewalk to sidewalk. The underground work will include installation of new storm sewers, sections of new sanitary sewer and installation of water pipes for an eventual fire suppression water system. At the surface, the work will include replacement of the sidewalks and the street as well as installation of new street trees, street lights and other landscape and streetscape improvements.
For the duration of the project, most traffic will be detoured around the one-block section using Highway Z/Holy Hill Road. Downtown businesses will remain open for customers. Pedestrian access to businesses will be maintained at all times except when actual sidewalk-related work is occurring in front of the business. Business customer traffic to the downtown will be directed to the municipal parking lot adjacent to the Chamber building via the Basset Street entrances.
Additional information will be made available through periodic media releases, through the Chamber of Commerce, and through the Village’s website at www.villageoftwinlakes.net. The public is encouraged to contact the Village Hall staff at 262-877-2858 with questions or concerns throughout the construction.
