St. Alphonsus Church to present Passion this weekend

St. Alphonsus Parish in New Munster is celebrating its 11th year of writing and producing a religious play of the “Passion Of Our Lord, Jesus Christ”. Each year they alternate which gospel writer they are basing it off of. This year, 2010, it will be according to Luke.

It will be performed only twice. Presentation dates are March 26 and March 27 at 7:30 p.m.

The cast is made up of adults and youth mostly from the parish, but also from surrounding parishes as well as other religions are included and welcomed. It is truly a community event.

It starts with Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem, and follows his life all the way through the crucifixion. The Last Supper, one of the most poignant scenes is also a favorite of many. The lighting and the music surrounding this scene really sets the tone. Even as Jesus is sent to the High Priests and then to Pilate and Herod, you will experience the ridicule and persecution first hand. You can even here the whipping of Jesus after he is taken away and beaten.

The Crucifixion Scene, is by far the most moving scene of all. Jesus’ carrying in of the cross and then being crucified will move you to tears. It will also make you think.

This re-enactment of Christs’ passion takes place within St. Alphonsus Church. The architecture of this beautiful church only enhances the dynamics of this event.
