The Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of an infant in Paddock Lake this morning, which appears to have been the result of a family sharing a bed.
Deputies and emergency personnel responded to the home in the 6400 block of 247th Avenue at 6:41 p.m., a press release from the Sheriff’s Department said.
Deputies found the father performing CPR on his 6-week-old baby son. Upon the rescue squad’s arrival, the baby was transported to St. Catherine’s Hospital were he was pronounced deceased on arrival.
Sheriff’s detectives immediately responded to the scene to investigate. Initial accounts indicate the death appears to involve a co-sleeping situation. According to investigators, the 31-year-old father, the 27-year-old mother, a 3-year-old sibling and the infant had all been sleeping in the same bed.
The parents are cooperating with deputies and the case remains under investigation.
“It is unfortunate that we must take this opportunity to remind the public of the potential dangers involved when adults sleep with infants. As indicated above, the potential for tragedy cannot be overstated,” the press release concluded.
