As with most rivalry games, “they” say you can throw out the records when Wilmot and Central play.
Well last night was no exception as the undefeated Central Falcons girls hosted the winless Wilmot Panthers in Paddock Lake.
The Falcons led into the fourth quarter and held off a late valiant effort by the Panthers. But Central kept their record perfect with a 36-33 win.
The Falcons used a strong box and one defense to hold Wilmot senior standout Jackie Herman to 1 point in the first half. Sophomore Hayden Krueger and senior Heather Pohlman’s entire focus tonight was to harass and stay in front of the Wilmot leading scorer and they did an outstanding job.
The Falcons were led on offense by sophomore point guard Abbey Reeves’ game high 17 points. Reeves also helped distribute the ball to teammates, assisting on many inside points by senior Margee Prokop, 11 points.
Central also had great team rebounding, often blocking out so effectively in the first half, the rebounds were taken after the missed shot hit the floor.
Wilmot freshman Sarah Vozel took advantage of being left open due to the help defense to score 7 of her teams 10 points at halftime to keep the Panthers close 18-10.
During the last minute of the game, the score seesawed, and with the score tied at 33, Reeves took the ball to the basket with 8.8 seconds left and was fouled from behind. She hit one of two to put Central up 34-33. Wilmot rushed the ball up the floor, only to have Randi Rederer deflect a pass to Reeves, who then passed to Heather Pohlman for a layup at the buzzer to finish the scoring 36-33.
Vozel led the Panthers with a team high 12 points, followed by Herman with 7.
