The first step toward extending wake allowed hours for boaters on Hooker Lake was narrowly approved by the Salem Town Board Monday night.
The ordinance, approved by a 3 to 2 vote, would extend wake allowed hours just on Hooker Lake to a half hour before sundown on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Wakes are not allowed after 7 p.m. the other days of the week.
The ordinance now has to be approved by the state Department of Natural Resources to go into effect.
Frank Bell, representing the Hooker Lake Management District, said the extended hours passed a majority of attendees at a district annual meeting.
Several residents spoke for and against the change during citizens comments.
Those opposing the extended hours argued that new times would cut into opportunities for fishing and quiet enjoyment of the lake.
Those favoring the extension said current hours can make it difficult for some people — who may work later — to enjoy water skiing and other motorized lake recreation.
Dean Hintzman, chairman of the Camp and Center Lake Rehabilitation District, argued that neither side of the debate was addressing what was best for the lake’s ecology.
Supervisor Joe Meier, a member of the lake management district board, made the motion to approve the extended hours. Chairman Linda Valentine and Supervisor Dennis Faber voted against the extension.
