Preliminary hearings for the four men charged in the murder of a Brighton resident got under way Wednesday.

The hearings were continued until Nov. 12.

Charged with first-degree intentional homicide and other crimes in the shooting death of  Robin Leydel of Brighton are:

  • John M. Navigato, 50, of Bristol.
  • Brian D. Suchecki, 37, of Twin Lakes.
  • Richard J. Beeter, 54, of Lake Villa, Ill.

Leydel was killed Oct. 13 after three men entered his home on Highway K in Brighton around midnight Oct. 13. He died of a single gunshot wound to the chest.

While the men were still in the home, Leydel’s wife called 911 to report the incident. A sheriff’s deputy on patrol in neighboring Paddock Lake responded to the call and saw a car leave the Leydel’s driveway. He pulled that car over after being  joined by another deputy. The four suspects were in that car, Sheriff’s Department officials said. Three guns were also found by deputies in the vehicle.

At a preliminary hearing, witnesses are called by the state to show sufficient evidence exists to link the suspects to the crime and for the case to proceed. An arraignment, where a defendant is formally charged and asked to enter a plea, follows the preliminary hearing.
