Salem to create program to to help homeowners with sanitary sewer backups

town-of-salem-signThe Salem Town Board has approved the creation of a program that could help owners effected  by sanitary sewer backups during severe weather.

The grant reimbursement program would help homeowners install valves between their sewer lateral and their toilet to check back flow of sewage into their homes, explained Chairman Linda Valentine.

The program would have an initial budget of $50,000, funded from the fund balance of the sewer utility district, said Brad Zautcke, utility administrator.

The utility district has identified five resident properties that had backups during the June heavy rainfall that qualify for the program.
