State Rep. Samantha Kerkman recently visited Webelo Scout packs 328 and 329 during a joint pack meeting to assist them with fulfilling service project requirements in civics. During the meeting, Rep. Kerkman explained the make-up of Wisconsin government and how the legislative process works. She talked about the three branches of government and their importance to maintaining checks and balances of power.
In discussing the legislative process, Rep. Kerkman alluded to a bill she recently co-sponsored that would make cheese the official state snack of Wisconsin. She explained that after Senate Bill 327 was introduced, it was referred to the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Higher Education where a public hearing must be held before committee members will vote on whether or not to refer the bill to the full Senate for a floor vote. Once passed by the Senate, SB 327 would be messaged to the Assembly where the process would be repeated until the bill ultimately makes it to the governor’s desk.
“The scouts were a great group and I was very happy to explain to them how their state government works,†said Rep. Kerkman.
She also encourages other Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops to contact her if they wish to have her speak to them in order to fulfill badge and project requirements.
