Young Eagles, a chapter for youth in the EAA, Experimental Aircraft Association, had a event  in Camp Lake Saturday that gave participants a chance to experience a unique flying experience.

Linda Valentine wrote the following report:

Forty five kids signed up for a first come-first served chance to take a 15-minute flight around the area in one of three single engine air planes participating in the program. Each child got a a taste of flight that is so very different than flying in a commercial plane with many other passengers. They got the chance to simply lift off the ground and tour around the area at an altitude that allowed some to spot their own homes and schools and favorite places.

“Several of the kids live within an arms reach of the airport and for the first time, got a chance to fly in one of the planes that they can regularly see fly over their homes. For some, it was a choice similar to opting to ride a screaming devil roller coaster at a theme park. For others, it was a ride that will prompt them to ride again, and perhaps pilot a plane themselves one day. For parents, it was a chance to watch their children participate in a new experience and to see some of the planes that were on display. Others watched pilots start their planes the old fashioned way, by going outside and spinning the blades.”
