Paris town officials are going to look again at having weeds growing between the bricks of the town memorial taken care of by the contractor they previously hired to do the job.

Resident Steve Savas raised the issue at last week’s Town Board meeting during citizen’s comments. The weeds are bad enough in some instances that names of people being memorialized on the paving bricks are obscured, he said.

“We have a beautiful thing here, and it’s a dump,” Savas said.

The weeds are growing up among the paving bricks on the walk leading up to the circular portion of the memorial. The bricks in the circular portion are weed free.

The memorial was erected by the town to honor town residents who have served in the military, were elected officials, served with the  fire department or for other reasons.

Though another audience member volunteered to eliminate the weeds, the board was in favor of having the contractor come back to remedy the problem.

“We hired someone to do it, it should be done right,” said Chairman Virgil Gentz.

There is some concern about what can be used to get rid of weeds in the memorial due to possible damage to the paving bricks, Gentz said.
