The Salem Booster Club “continues to surge forward,” in the words of President John Philippi.
Over the last several weeks the club has found individuals to act as directors for its two main areas of focus — sports and clubs. Dan Derler has agreed to coordinate sports and Mindy Stewart is heading up clubs.
Sports are farther ahead, Philippi said. Continued participation in the Westosha Conference has been secured and all sports have coaches and assistants.
The Booster Club is now focused heavily on the clubs, where a “serious effort to fill the remaining club leader positions” is under way, Philippi said. Many clubs have had leaders step forward, but club leaders are being sought for:
- Computer.
- Forensics (public speaking and debate).
- Musical.
- Drama.
- Spectrum (Talented and Gifted).
- Tech Education (shop).
“Although we have a lot of volunteers already willing to assist with these clubs, we do not yet have someone to take full ownership,” Philippi said.
There are several key points Philippi stresses to those who may be reluctant to lead a club due to past pratices or time commitment:
- The club descriptions and format are at the sole discretion of the leaders. It is what you decide it to be. It does not necessarily need to be exactly as it has been in the past.
- Clubs don’t necessarily need to be “weekly at 3:30 p.m. at Salem Grade School.” Clubs can take place where and when the leaders want — before school, in the evenings, offsite (library, town hall, etc.).
- New clubs could be added such as chess, sewing, etc.
“If you have a passion for something and are willing to lead it, let’s talk,” Philippi said.
“We are in the final stretch, school starts in five weeks,” Philippi said. “We desperately want to claim that all previous clubs will be available next year. Let’s get the word out of these final positions!”
