Bristol Progress Days this weekend

It’s been coming to you for 40 years and this year is no exception.

Progress Days, Bristol’s annual community festival, starts Friday. This year’s theme is “Cheers for 40 Years,” capturing the event’s anniversary.

The annual banquet is Friday night at the Parkway Chateau. A highlight of the event is the announcement of this year’s Miss Bristol and the town’s Outstanding Citizen(s).

The rest of the weekend should be familiar to Progress Days regulars. A carnival will return this year, after a schedule conflict left the event without rides in 2008. There will be a softball tournament. On Saturday, there will be a volleyball tournament. Bingo will be played Saturday and Sunday. Saturday is kids day with kids games from 10 to 11 a.m., pedal pull from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a carnival wristband special from 1 to 5 p.m.

The huge amount of candy thrown at the Progress Days parade has earned it the nickname “the candy parade.” This year’s parade steps off at 12:30 p.m., Sunday. Bring a bag to collect your sweets.

Some summer celebrations have canceled fireworks around the country, but there will be fireworks at Progress Days at dusk on Sunday.
