The Silver Lake Firefighters Festival — this year with an expanded lineup of activities and support from the newly formed Greater Silver Lake Area Chamber of Commerce — took place Friday and Saturday.
Here are some scenes from Saturday:
Victoria Bormann, of Silver Lake, turns the crank on a 1901 rope making machine. The hands on activity was part of a display of antique equipment presented by the Southeast Wisconsin Antique Power and Collectibles Society.
Syndie Bernier of Salem takes a kick at scoring in a soccer game. This year's festival included several children's activities in Schmalfeldt Park.
Some of the participants in the pet parade take a lap for the judges. The parade was a new activity sponsored by Scully's Silver Lake Grill.
Pet parade judges Elizabeth Tyson, David Kott and Allen Hanus look over the contestants. First place went to dog Gracie, accompanied by Ben Scully. Second went to Heather Pitcher's cat Clover Honey.
One of the more action packed parts of the festival was another of the new activities, the spaghetti eating contests, one for children one for adults. It was sponsored by Binanti’s Taste of Italy. Here’s some video of the start of the children’s contest:
And the winner in the children's division is --- Zachary Williams of Silver Lake. Second was Holden Straub.
With the kids done, the adults move dup to the pasta eating table. Here, some of the contestants contemplate the much larger size of the adult portion -- one full pound of spaghetti.
Winner of the adult division of the spaghetti eating contest David Lathrop of the Silver Lake Fire Department contemplates his victory. No one finished the bowl, but Lathrop's was judged as being the most empty. Afterwards he said his winning strategy was to "keep going and keep it down." Second place went to Bobby Thomas of Burlington.
It was time for the amateurs to water fight in the afternoon. Here, the Pete's Construction team fights in vain to keep DK Treeworks from pushing the barrel across the Pete's line in early bracket action.
There also was music in the park throughout the day. Here’s a little of The Affordables performance of obscure Billy Joel album cut “All for Leyna:”
