Road improvements needed for athletic facility

Part of the plans included in the new athletic facility project is improving and expanding highways 50 and 83.

Administrator Dr. Scott Pierce reported on the draft designed by the Department of Transportation at the Tuesday night Central High School Board meeting. Improvement plans in part include four northbound lanes (an exclusive left-turn lane, two through lanes, and an exclusive right turn lane), for the south approach. The northbound right-turn lane will have a minimum storage length of 75 feet and a 100-foot taper length in order to avoid the house in the southeast quadrant of the intersection.

The west approach will have four eastbound lanes (an exclusive left-turn lane, two through lanes, and an exclusive right-turn lane). The eastbound right-turn lane will have a minimum storage length of 150 feet and a 75-foot taper length.

The board listened to a report on the nursing assistant program that will be offered at the high school this fall. The program is contracted with Gateway Technical College. A maximum of 10 students can enroll and three can be put on a wait list. If the 10 slots are not filled, the program will open to the community.

Two recognitions were given. Dan Simon was recognized for being the Southern Lakes Conference Athlete of the Year award and being a State Track qualifier which won him fourth place on the pole vault competition. Board President Mary Ellen Pearsall presented Simon with a certificate for his accomplishments, on behalf of the board, and Athletic Director Kris Allison presented a Booster Club plaque.

Also recognized was Nancy Switalla who was thanked for her graduation commencement exercise.
