The NSA held their Class E NIT Saturday at Lumpy’s Sports Bar and Grill. The skies were overcast and we were feeling the drops but as the day went on the drops stopped and the clouds gave way to sunny skies and a very enjoyable afternoon.

This tournament featured all Wisconsin teams and of the 11 games played only three of them were decided by more than four runs. Xtreme Softball, who plays in a league at Lumpy’s, started out by beating Time Out Sports Pub 15-12 and then took on Kaspers, from Milwaukee and beat them 5-3 to advance to the Championship game. In the Championship game Kaspers came back, through the Losers’ bracket, to beat Xtreme Softball 18-7. Because this is a double elimination tournament, the two teams faced off again to determine the winner. This time Xtreme Softball left no doubts in anyone’s mind by beating Kaspers 21-11 and sending them on that long ride home to Milwaukee.

Ron Trodler from Xtreme Softball, and, Mike Panoch from Kaspers, shared the MVP honors.

As tournament director, I was disappointed that he had so few teams, but I received many compliments on the tournament and the way it flowed so smoothly. I felt that the reason things went so well is because we had great teams and great umpires.

The teams that participated and their final record are: Xtreme Softball, 3-1; Kaspers, 4-2; Time Out Sports (plays at Lumpy’s), 3-2; Schmidties Wolfpack (from Kenosha), 1-2; Chaos (from Kenosha), 0-2; and, Who Dat (from Union Grove), 0-2.

This year the NSA, in Wisconsin, is collecting food at each of its tournaments and donating the food to The Sharing Center in Paddock Lake for those of us who are less fortunate in this economy.

The next tournament will be the Class D NIT at Lumpy’s on June 13.
