Paddock Lake committees issue to be aired Tuesday

pl-logo1A special Paddock Lake Village Board meeting — with the thorny issues of committee assignments and filling a vacant trustee slot on the agenda — has been scheduled for Tuesday, 5:30 p.m., at Village Hall.

A notice for the meeting was posted Friday.

Trustee Karen Harris said she and Trustee Chris Bucko called the meeting to discuss the issues, which Harris said she feels is hampering the completion of village business.

Committee assignments and the vacant trustee post came to the forefront at the May 20 Village Board meeting.

At that meeting, village President Marlene Goodson was unable to get a second for her committee assignments. Some trustees said they objected to changes Goodson made to the list without consulting other members of the Village Board. Without set committees, the village would operate with a committee of the whole system, said village attorney Jeff Davison. A notice has been appearing on the village website saying committee of the whole meetings will take place the Monday before the regular Village Board, which are on the third Wednesday of the month.

The open trustee seat is the one Goodson vacated to assume the presidency after the April election. Goodson said she had a replacement in mind, but some trustees wanted an opportunity to interview potential appointees. State statutes say the president makes the appointment, but it is not unusual for some sort of interview process to take place.

Instead of appointing someone, Goodson said she will now leave the seat open until it can be filled by election.
