Salem able to bring back classroom teacher

Stimulus funds will enable the Salem School District to bring back one classroom teacher previously noticed for lay-off.

The School Board Tuesday night approved two measures for spending the stimulus money, which has to be spent in certain areas. But funding those areas with stimulus money freed up money to pay for the classroom teacher.

Some $173,000 for reading specialists will come from Title 1 targeted stimulus money the district will receive. The district will also use IDEA targeted money for a half-time psychologist and special ed teachers. Some $82,000 of IDEA money also will be kept for the next school year, said business manager Peter Geissel.

The School Board laid off staff and cut extracurriculars spending last month after a fourth try at passing a tax levy referendum failed.
