The Riverview School Board laid off five support staff workers Monday night in an attempt to match the school’s budget with shrinking revenue.
Laid off by a 4 to 1 vote of the board were a custodian, two aides, a tech aide and a music aide. Brent Brenner was the only vote against the lay-off.
President James Walker thanked the support staff union for working with the board in identifying the cuts.
“This has not been an easy time,” Walker said. “I appreciate the support staff working with us.”
The board was looking to make about $100,000 in cuts with the lay-offs and other savings. Administrator Todd LeRoy said the board needed to react to its anticipated financial situation now and make needed cuts rather than tap the district’s reserves repeatedly until they dwindle as some other districts in the area have done.
“It’s gut wrenching it really is,” said board member Chris Willkomm. “You don’t want to put anyone out of a job, especially these days, but what do you do?”
