A west of the I GM dealer appears to have escaped the automaker’s chopping block.

Hartnell Chevrolet in Salem has not received a notice that its franchise agreement will not be renewed, said manager Kevin Ryczek.

Such notices were being received by General Motors dealers today all over the US. The move to trim perhaps as many as 1,600 dealers is part of GM’s restructuring in the face of the company’s precarious financial situation.

“We did not receive a letter, and we don’t expect to receive one,” Ryczek said this afternoon. He added that Hartnell was in “good standing” with GM and therefore not likely a target for a cut, according to performance benchmarks released to dealers.

Chrysler announced cuts to its dealer network yesterday. Palmen Chrysler in Kenosha and Martin’s Chrysler Dodge in Union Grove were not cut.

The automakers are cutting dealers as part of efforts to streamline operations and distribution.
