A local group is offering a post prom party timed to coordinate with the Central High School prom this coming weekend.
The event will be hosted by Youth for Christ and held at the Youth Center at First Assembly of God Church, 10700 75th St., just east of Interstate 94. It will include a live performance by the band “The Spark,” a performance by comedian Joe Kessler, snacks and giveaways of gift certificates and electronics.
Saturday also is prom night at Tremper High School in Kenosha, and students from that dance are invited as well.
The event has received the endorsement of Sheriff David Beth.
“As I speak with parents of teenagers throughout our county I often hear stories of concern about their children’s activities,” Beth said. “Parents want to let their children have fun and enjoy some amount of freedom, yet know their child’s activities are safe and supervised. Many times parents express a desire for more of these types of activities to be available.
“Students are out having a great time at prom and do not want that fun to end,” Beth said. “Often times students go to unsupervised parties where drugs and alcohol are available. We all know these types of environments are unsafe for students in both the short and long term.”
The Youth for Christ event provides an alternative that Beth said he felt should be attractive to students.
“Youth for Christ of Southeast Wisconsin recognizes the need for a safe after prom event,” Beth said.
The party starts at 11 p.m. Students coming in will be expectd to stay until 4 a.m.
“For those students looking for trouble, they better choose another place to find it,” Beth said. “Off duty deputies have volunteered to chaperone this event.”
Though the event is sponsored by Youth for Christ and is being held at a church complex it will not include a religious message, organizers said.
Tickets are $5 and available at Central and Tremper high schools. The school distcits are not sponsoring the event.
