The third biannual Salem School District Blood Drive is coming up April 23.

The Blood Center of Wisconsin drive will take place inside the intermediate gym, as it has in past years.  The drive runs from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. Sign ups are in 15-minute intervals and two people can sign up at any given time.

It takes from 30 to 45 minutes to do all the paperwork and give blood.

Last spring, this drive had to turn away 20 some people because of low iron, so load up on that spinach and those raisins the whole week before, advised drive organizer Jenni Meier, a teacher at the school.

I was one of the guilty ones last spring and the gentleman doing the iron testing said 24 hours before is pretty much too late to try and get the iron into your blood stream.  It usually takes at least 24 hours to absorb into your system,” Meier said.

Contact Meier at 843-2356 ext. 321 or Rolly Peckus at (262) 960-0254 to make an appointment.  Anyone between the ages of 16 and 100 can give.  Sixteen year olds must have a parental permission release signed before giving, which can be obtained from Meier at Salem Grade School or on line at www.bcw.edu.

If you have any questions about whether you can donate, contact the Blood Center of Wisconsin at 1-877- BE A HERO or www.bcw.edu.

The school is at 8828 Antioch Road (Highway 83), but the entrance is off Highway AH (89th Street).
