Salem takes stand against statewide sex offender residency law
The Salem Town Board will be sending a letter to the state legislature stating the town's opposition to a bill that seeks to establish statewide standards for where released sex offenders can live and frequent.

The Village Board this week approved the trip to the 2010 Fight for Air Stair Climb on March 20 at the US Bank Center.
Teams from local fire departments compete for a traveling trophy. Teams from other organizations and individuals also participate.

Local units responding to help fight Delavan fire
Within the last 30 minutes (since about 2:15 p.m.), the Wheatland and Silver Lake Fire Departments have both been called to respond as mutual aid to help fight a fire in Delavan.
Both departments are sending tenders.
UPDATE 2:56 p.m. - Paris is also being called to this fire with a tender.

Silver Lake to examine possibilities for public launch pier

Over the next two months, Silver Lake will be exploring putting in a pier at its public boat launch off of Cogswell Drive on the north side of the lake.
And if it can't figure out how to do it, the result may be closing that launch to the public, village President Roger Johnson said.

Silver Lake FD to have old grass rig appraised
The Silver Lake Village Board has instructed fire Chief Scott Barnes to have an old -- and now infrequently used -- piece of fire fighting equipment appraised in preparation for a possible sale.
The department's 1969 Dodge "grass rig" might appeal to a collector, a museum or be sold for another use, trustees discussed.

The Silver Lake Village Board said a formal thank you to its police department Wednesday.
Chief Dan Kingsley, the rest of the patrol officers (some officers could not attend) and police and municipal court clerk Diane Maki were given certificates of appreciation at the beginning of the board regular meeting. The presentations were made by Trustee Barbara Ironside, who chairs the board's Police and Judicial Committee.

Silver Lake celebrated 12th Night with a large bonfire of Christmas trees and wreaths Wednesday night.
The fire warmed about 35 people gathered to watch. Several firefighters watched over the flames as well.

Highway B and 50 traffic controls for real now
No more flashing lights. The signals at Highway B and Highway 50 are working in the regular way.
That essentially completes a project that started at the location in July to improve the layout of lanes at the intersection and place the traffic lights.
Consequently, access to Silver Lake from the north is convenient once more. (The project was voted most inconvenient in a West of the I poll earlier this year.)

As of today the traffic signals at Highway 50 and Highway B are flashing.
Typically the state has such new signals blink for a while before fully activiating so driers get used to their presence.
The project to add the signals and improve turn lanes at the intersection has been going on since July.

Highway B open again at Highway 50
Highway B has been reopened at its intersection with Highway 50.
But the new traffic signals installed at the intersection are still dark.
The project, which started in July, reconfigured the intersection with more structured turn lanes and installed the lights.
Work there was supposed to be done in November, but was delayed by poor soil conditions and weather, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation has said.

All homeowners in Silver Lake -- except for the winners the last three years -- are eligible to participate in the village's annual holiday decorating contest.
This is the 13th year the village will conduct the contest, which awards prizes to the three homeowners whose houses are judged to best represent the spirit of Christmas.

Highway 50 and B intersection expected to open Dec. 11
The Highway 50 and Highway B intersection work is expected to be completed by Dec. 11, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation say.
"In fact, the lights should begin flashing on Tuesday, if weather holds," said Dennis Shook, WisDOT, regional communications manager. If that happens, the signals would then be completely operable by next Friday.

Former Silver Lake village President Ronald C. Wieland has been charged with two counts of second degree sexual assault of a child, court records show.
Wieland is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing tomorrow in Kenosha before court Commissioner Carl Greco.
Silver Lake police Chief Daniel Kingsley said Wieland was arrested last week in Silver Lake, where Wieland still lives.

Silver Lake to shop health insurance in face of 16.6 percent increase
Silver Lake officials will be shopping around for health insurance in an effort to avoid the 16.6 percent increase presented by the village's current carrier.
The insurance covers village employees. The Village Board heard about the hike from agent Craig Vaughn of David Insurance at Wednesday's Village Board meeting.
