Bristol tops West of the I entries in Battle of the Books meet
Bristol School, with a fifth place finish, topped the West of the I contingent in the recent Westosha Area Battle of the Books meet hosted at Bristol School.
In Battle of the Books, students prepare by reading a list of books. This year there were 39 titles on the list. In the competition, the teams compete to correctly answer questions about the books they read.

Silver Lake chamber candidate forum coverage
The Greater Silver Lake Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a candidate forum Saturday at Scully's Silver Lake Grill.

This year's Westosha Area Battle of the Books got started today at host Bristol School.
Teams from Bristol, Riverview, Paris, Salem, Wheatland, Union Grove, Freidens, Bethany Lutheran, Yorkville and Raymond are participating.
The competition will continue the next two Mondays.

School Board cooperative group may be forming
Riverview School Board member Brent Brenner is trying to get board members from the Wilmot High School feeder school districts to meet to share info on a regular basis.
Brenner outlined his concept at a meeting of the Wheatland Center School Board Tuesday night.

The results of our most recent West of the I poll were decidedly in favor of holiday parties at school during school hours for students.
The most pro party answer -- "Kids need some relief from the school day once in a while. Parties during school are OK" --received the highest percentage of votes -- 45 percent.

Riverview School will be welcoming back a familiar face as the district's interim administrator.
Douglas Feld who has filled various roles at the school for 40 years, was tapped by the School Board Monday to fill the administrator role while a permanent replacement for outgoing administrator Todd LeRoy is sought.

The district's new position on not allowing Halloween parties during the school day without academic justification will remain in place after the issue received a hearing before the School Board Monday night.
The policy on parties had previously been approved, but appeared as an agenda item on Monday's meeting agenda.

A tax levy increase of about 21 percent was approved by the electors and school board of the Riverview School District Monday night.
Like most other Western Kenosha County school districts this fall, that steep increase in the amount of district revenue to come from local property taxes was chiefly due to less state aid than last year and less even than what was estimated earlier this budget season.

Riverview School District administrator leaving as of Nov. 13
Todd LeRoy, Riverview School District administrator, has resigned and will be leaving the district by Nov. 13.
The School Board accepted the resignation at a special board meeting last night.

Riverview boys take softball championship
Riverview School has racked up another softball championship.
The Riverview boys softball team defeated Yorkville by the score 14-4 to win the championship again this year, the school's third title since 2002.
After the game, the team got the hero treatment with an escort into town by the Silver Lake Fire Department. More details here at the school's website.Education Building awards announced
While there are hundreds of projects included in the Education Building exhibit at the Kenosha County Fair, a few are selected each year for special recognition. Those winners gathered Sunday at the Education building in recognition of their awards.
Here are the education Building's Best of the Best for 2009:
- Pre-kindergarten: Tyee Simek, Riverview School, and Cantin Schiler, Westosha.
- Kindergarten: Josh Donnellan, Wheatland Center School, and Leonardo Cordova, Paris School.
- First and second grades
Riverview to seek one hour of no parking on Prosser

Riverview School will likely seek no parking on either side of Prosser Street near the school to facilitate a new bus drop-off plan, said village Trustee Chris Willkomm, who also is a member of the School Board.

Riverview board trims 5 to close budget deficit
The Riverview School Board laid off five support staff workers Monday night in an attempt to match the school's budget with shrinking revenue.
Laid off by a 4 to 1 vote of the board were a custodian, two aides, a tech aide and a music aide. Brent Brenner was the only vote against the lay-off.
President James Walker thanked the support staff union for working with the board in identifying the cuts.
