The International Aviation Art Contest recently announced results for the 2018 year, including two student artists from Lakewood School in Twin Lakes, placing competitively at the state level.

The National Association of State Aviation Officials  in partnership with the Bureau of Aeronautics at the Wisconsin Department of Transportation invited students to generate original artwork promoting the excitement and adventure of the world of flight. The theme for the 2018 contest was “Flight into the Future.” Children between the ages of 6 and 17 were tasked with interpreting this theme as a two-dimensional drawing or painting by hand. Entries were judged in three separate classes by age, and given consideration for their creative execution of the theme, combined with the overall idea of aviation.

Diana Albiter’s (5th Grade) submission, featuring a humorous depiction of a pineapple-centric future society, was selected as a top 10 finalist in her age group. Her imaginative work shows anthropomorphic pineapples enjoying all of the facets of modern civilization, including aviation technology.

Ayleen Alvarado (4th Grade) submitted artwork featuring a “resist” technique of combining oil pastel and watercolor. Her picture envisioned contemporary passenger airliners traversing the far reaches of space, where alien sightings, shooting stars, and floating space tourists are a reality. Ayleen’s artwork was awarded 1st place in her age category at the state level, and will be displayed in Wisconsin’s capitol building between March 16 and March 30. In addition to this, Ayleen also has the opportunity to choose between a $100 art supply gift certificate or a discovery flight for her and a friend.

The two recipients were informed of their accomplishments by Meredith Alt, the Aviation Education Program Manager for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation/DTIM/Aeronautics. In addition to announcing the finalists, she also commended Lakewood School art students for having a notably high level of participation in this contest
