The School-Based Enterprises at Wilmot Union High School and Central High School were among 391 school-based enterprises in the United States achieving Gold Level Certification (or Gold Level Re- certification) this year. Both will be recognized at DECA’s International Career Development Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.

The students who worked on the project this year at Wilmot UHS were Lauren Christensen and Ian Torstenson with the assistance of their advisor, Marissa Huff. The school store at Wilmot Union High School, or “THE PAW,” has been in operation for 5-plus years. The PAW is a school-based enterprise that is run by students in the Business, Management, & Entrepreneurship course at WUHS. Students in the BME course learn about retail management, operations, selling practices, ethics, and how to start and run a small business. They are responsible for product and pricing decisions as well as daily operations, financial management, cleanliness, and inventory control in the school store.

The students who worked on the certification at Central HS were Kaitlyn Barningham, Addison Borchert and Ashley Wells with the assistance of their advisor, Melissa Bahnson. The school-based enterprise at Central High School, The Falcon’s Nest, has operated for five years.

A school-based enterprise (SBE) is an entrepreneurial operation in a school setting that provides goods and services to meet the needs of the market. SBEs are managed and operated by students as hands-on learning laboratories that integrate National Curriculum Standards in Marketing, Finance, Hospitality and Management. Marketing educators and DECA advisors have utilized this effective educational tool for over four decades to provide their students with realistic and practical learning experiences that reinforce classroom instruction, enhance 21st century skill development, and prepare students for college and careers.

DECA’s School-based Enterprise Certification Program was developed to provide recognition for outstanding achievement by school-based enterprises and to motivate SBEs to strive for excellence and growth. Complete information about DECA’s School-based Enterprise Certification
Program can be found at www.deca.org/sbe.
