Paddock Lake passes tax levy with less than 1 percent increase

The Paddock Lake Village Board passed its 2018 tax levy Wednesday night.

The levy of  $1,571,653 represents a .22 percent increase from 2017.

The levy passed by a vote of 6-1 with Trustee Kathy Christenson absent.

The lone no vote against the levy was from village President Terry Burns. His opposition was because the budget supported by the levy includes a 3 percent pay increase for village employees rather than the customary 2 percent increase of recent years. The additional 1 percent amounts to a total of $4,702.

This year’s additional 1 percent pay increase was funded by the village not having to buy road salt for the coming winter due to a stockpile, Burns said. Burns is concerned about the board feeling bound to give that 3 percent increase in future years when the extra money from not buying salt may not be available.

“It’s easy to go up, it’s hard to go down,” Burns said after the meeting.

The portion of the levy that goes for general village operations actually decreased this year by $1,639 or .00144 percent. The increase in the total levy was due to an approximately $5,000 increase in the debt service levy. Village administrator Tim Popanda said this is the last year the debt service levy should increase and he expects to to begin to decrease starting in fiscal year 2019.

  1. Are You Kidding???? says:

You know you really can’t make this stuff up.

People got a bigger raise than ‘normal’ just because there was some extra money laying around? So next year when there isn’t any extra money laying around or for that matter, when you have to buy extra salt, are they going to give back that 1% and take a reduction in pay? Of course not.

What kind of board do you have over there in Paddock Lake? You got a mill rate that’s twice that of Salems and you giving out raises to your employees? Aren’t you taxed enough over there? Wouldn’t you want a $4000 reduction in property taxes?
Paddock Lake residents should consider rescinding their village charter and becoming part of Salem Lakes. Your taxes will go down your services will go up and you’ll get rid of a board that just gave away $4000 of your money because it was just laying around.

The village administrator and this green acres village board should be ashamed of themselves giving away our hard earned money when our sewer and garbage collection services continue to go up. Somebody needs to start a petition to remove this people.
