Here’s how to run for Salem Lakes village offices in April

Those looking to run for office in April in the new combined village of Salem Lakes will have some special procedures to follow.

The cooperative plan calling for a merger of Salem and Silver Lake into the new village of Salem Lakes recently was approved by the state Department of Administration.

When the merger takes effect on Feb. 14, 2017, the current Silver Lake Village Board — now as the Salem Lakes Village Board — will govern the municipality until the April 4 election. In that election, four positions on the seven-member board will be filled from residents of the new municipality. Those seats are currently held by village President Bruce Nopenz and Trustees Patrick Dunn, Eric Erickson and Doug Randolph. The other three seats will be up for election in 2018.

The municipal judge seat held by Marlene Engstrom will also be on the ballot.

Anyone who is an elector in the current town of Salem or village of Silver Lake can run for the Salem Lakes positions.

Nomination packets and instructions are available as of Tuesday from the Salem town clerk’s office and the Silver Lake village clerk’s office. Candidates may begin circulating the papers on Dec. 1. Completed papers will need to be returned to the Silver Lake clerk by Tuesday, Jan. 3.
