Everyone knows that wine and cheese go together.

You might not think that wine making and cheese making go together as well, but apparently they do, at least for one open class exhibitor at the 2016 Kenosha County Fair.

Brian Hettrick of Salem was awarded grand champion for wine for his dry, white grape wine entry. Hettrick also won grand champion for his hard cheese, cow milk entry.

Cheese, beer and wine making are new open class categories for the fair, with this being only their second year, said Superintendent Jill Anderson.

Hettrick, a physician whose office is in Paddock Lake, lobbied Anderson for years to add cheese making, she said.

I guess now we know why.

Participation in the fair competition by beer, wine and cheese makers has been somewhat low, Anderson said. She encourages more beer, wine and cheese makers to try their skills against others at next year’s fair.
