Kerkman and Ohnstad Good Samaritan passes Assembly

Form the office of state Rep. Smantha Kerkman:

Rep. Samantha Kerkman (R-Salem) along with Rep. Tod Ohnstad (D-Kenosha) brought forth Assembly Bill 308.  On Oct. 27, 2015, AB 308 passed the Wisconsin State Assembly on a bipartisan vote. Under AB 308, a person who damages a vehicle in order to rescue another individual or an animal would be exempt from being sued for damages by the owner of the vehicle. This also helps deter people from just blatantly damaging other individuals’ cars by requiring that the Good Samaritan must dial 911 prior to entering the vehicle. Heat can be deadly, and even on a fairly warm day, the temperature inside a car can rise fast. Summer heat waves have contributed to more weather-related deaths than tornados and severe storms. The idea for this piece of legislation came about from a resolution from the City of Kenosha Alderperson Rocco LaMacchia and approval from the entire city council last September. “I am proud to be a part of bipartisan, proactive legislation that would allow for individuals to assist in a life or death situation,” said Rep. Kerkman.”
