Salem School students walk all over South America — on a giant map

salem-school-giant-mapSalem School hosted a National Geographic’s giant map of South America earlier this week, through the efforts of sixth grade teacher Diane Thomson. The visit was sponsored by the Wisconsin Alliance for Geography. Salem was one of only 15 schools in the state to get such a visit this school year.

The map itself is 22 feet by 35 feet and was housed in the intermediate gym. Students got a chance to walk on the coastal beaches, travel the Andes Mountain Range, dip their sock clad (no shoes on the map!) feet in the Amazon River and participate in various geography activities lead by Bonnie Kieffer from Beaver Dam.

The students will show what they know by doing a before and after map of South America.

One fifth grader sized foot equaled about 100 miles on the map.
