  1. Concerned Firefighter says:

Let me get this straight…….Silver Lake can afford to pay police officers to “patrol” the lake, assist Salem with a water related emergency, but can’t afford to put new tires on their fire trucks? Anybody see the irony in THAT!? Just curious…were those police officers in the boat “volunteers” or were they getting PAID?

  2. To "concerned" says:

The confusion you have is similar to many in the area. The Police Officers are paid because this is their real job. The Silver Lake Fireman are not paid as they are volunteers. The key word in their title being VOLUNTEER.

  3. Concerned Firefighter says:

OK….then why can’t the cops “volunteer”? Please explain.

  4. Bernard Punsley says:

Just curious…if some of our police officers are “part-time”…..is that their “real job”?

  5. to "Concerned" says:

Maybe before you open your mouth, you check your facts. The village gets reimbursed by the DNR for patrolling the water. BTW, SLFD was not dispatched to the call, TSFR was, they had no business self dispatching themselves.

  6. Concerned Firefighter says:

“the village gets reimbursed by the DNR for patrolling the water”…..so who paid for the boat, all the equipment on it, the officers uniforms, protective equipment, training etc? The DNR? As for your contention that SLFD was not needed, once we DISSOLVE, they will be operating under the umbrella of the Salem Fire & Rescue department, so your concerns will have been addressed. Keep that bullet in your pocket, Barney.

Bernard should be a contestant on ‘Jeopardy!’…. The man who has all the answers. If wisdom does come with age i assume Bernard is no less than 105 years old being extremely knowledgeable and experienced in any matter. His brilliance should be converted into a usable energy source.

  8. @Bernard aka J.A. says:

No matter how you dress it up,,,a “volunteer” fire fighter is still just that,,,, a VOLUNTEER. Maybe if you want to be paid like other professionals, like police officers, you might think about going back to school?

  9. Don’t know about Silver Lake’s case, but I know I was in a meeting in Salem where they were discussing sizable DNR reimbursement/cost sharing for the boats used to patrol the lakes.

  10. To Concerned Firefighter says:

You are right. The DNR does reimburse some of the costs. The fact remains that Silver Lake owns less than a third of the lake. Salem owns more than two thirds of the lake. Why is Salem not patrolling their side of the lake? Why is Silver Lake doing it at all?

  11. @To Concerned Firefighter says:

To answer that question, Salem and Silver lake have an agreement where Silver Lake PD patrols the lake and Salem Fire and Rescue respond to any emergency on the lake. That is why Silver Lake Fire and Rescue was not toned out for this call, but TSFR were dispatched. Even if the call is in front of Harm’s BP, TSFR is toned out.

  12. It makes sense says:

It make perfect sense. The Silver Lake Fire Department has outdated water rescue equipment. So they tone out TOSFR for rescue calls on Silver Lake. Silver Lake Village board is bankrupted.

  13. Salem agreement says:

The agreement between Salem and Silver Lake will not be in effect if the anti dissolvers petition is passed Nov 4. They never thought of that. Also that will go is all Lake agreements. Policing being one of them. You can not fix stupid.
