Wisconsin Lightning 18U Black eliminated at Nationals

The Kenosha County based Wisconsin Lightning 18U Black was eliminated on Friday from the ASA/USA National Championship Tournament in Montgomery, AL.

In the first game today, the Lightning lost 5-4 tot he Bama Bombers, Killan, AL in an eight inning international tie-breaker. The Lightning rallied back from a 4-0 deficit in the bottom of the sixth when Kali Kaestner singled scoring Justine Schattner and Courtney Ellingson to make the score 4-2 Bombers. The Lightning tied in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out RBI single by Courtney Ellingson knocking in Elizabeth Fonk and Ashley Madsen. This sent the game into an International tie-breaker. The Bombers scored one in the top of the eighth, and the Lightning stranded Bridget Nelson in the bottom of the eighth. The loss sent the Lightning into the Loser’s Bracket. Courtney Ellingson took the loss in relief of Kali Kaestner.

The Lightning moved on to play the Carolina Fire from Summerville, SC, in a Loser’s bracket game at 6:00 p.m. CST. The Lightning battled back from a 3-0 deficit in the fifth inning and plated two runs after a single by Elizabeth Fonk, a bunt single by Brittany Blazich, and a 2 RBI double by Larkin Langston moving the Lightning within one in the fifth inning, 3-2. The Lightning struck in the bottom of the sixth with Bridget leading off reaching for an error. Sarah Terrian singled to right field followed by a well-executed sacrifice bunt by Lauren Orszula moving runners to second and third. Elizabeth Fonk gave the Lightning a 4-3 lead with an RBI double scoring Nelson and Terrian. Larkin Langston finished the inning driving in Elizabeth Fonk to give a 5-3 margin. Pitcher, Courtney Ellingson got the win. Final score against the Fire was 5-3.

The Lightning moved on to play the Birmingham Vipers – Gillespie from Birmingham, AL. Kali Kaestner took the 4-0 loss. Kerrigan Patterson was a defensive standout for the Lightning. The Lightning offense was led by Ashley Madsen, Justine Schattner, and Elizabeth Fonk. With this loss, the Lightning finished within the top 16 of the 109 team ASA/USA National Championship tournament. Wisconsin Lightning was the last team north of the Mason-Dixie line to get knocked out of the tournament.

Members of the Wisconsin Lightning team were Central graduates Brittney Blazich, Liz Fonk and Larkin Langston, Tremper graduate Bridget Nelson, Wilmot graduates Kerrigan Patterson and Jessica Spahn, Wilmot seniors-to-be Lauren Orszula and Justine Schattner, Racine Case graduate Courtney Ellingson, Waterford graduate Sara Terrian, Kettle Moraine graduate Ashley Madsen, Mukwonago senior to be Kali Kaestner, and junior to be Sam Dahlen of Richmond Burton HS (IL). Wisconsin Lightning is coached by Steve Spahn, Robert Madsen, Kevin Orszula and Managed by Scott Hermes.
