WI Lightning 18U Black advanced at the ASA/USA 18u “A” National Championships with a 9-2 victory over the Snohomish Shock, Snohomish, WA at Fain Park in Montgomery, AL on Thursday.
The Lightning left a pair of runners on in the first and thwarted the Shock in the bottom of the first with a phenomenal defensive play by second basemen Kerrigan Patterson (Wilmot HS) on a diving stop and out with the lead runner on second.
The game stayed a scoreless tie until the top of the third when Courtney Ellingson unloaded with a solo home run to deep center field for a 1-0 lead for the Lightning. The Shock came back with 2 runs in the bottom of third for a 2-1 lead.
The game turned in the top of the 4 th as the Lightning exploded for 8 runs. The inning started with a lead off single by Bridget Nelson (Kenosha Tremper) followed by a Sara Terrian walk. Lauren Orszula (Wilmot HS) then drilled a solid single up the middle scoring Nelson. With 1 out, Britt Blazich (westosha Central) reached on a bunt single as Terrian scored on the late errant throw. Ashley Madsen followed with an RBI single, scoring Orszula with runners advancing to 2nd and 3rd on the throw to the plate. Larkin Langston (Westosha Central) followed with a single to left plating 2 more. Courtney Ellingson followed that with a towering two run home run to right field to give Lightning a 8-2 lead. Justine Schattner (Wilmot HS) followed that up with a solo shot to deep left center to give Lightning a 9-2 lead that stood up the rest of the way.
The battery of pitcher Courtney Ellingson and catcher Liz Fonk held the Shock to 2 runs on 6 hits with 3 strike outs and no walks.
Leading the offense was Ashley Madsen with 3 hits, Larkin Langston with 2 hits, Courtney Ellingson with 3 hits including 2 HR’s, Bridget Nelson 2 hits and Justine Schattner a solo home run.
The Lightning advances on in the Championship bracket against the Bama Bombers from Killen, AL at 1pm Friday at Fain Park, Montgomery, AL.
