Central High School faced Indian Trail High School in the opening round of the Honda Holiday Classic Thursday night at Carthage College.
Indian Trail won 54-51.
Here is a quarter by quarter report:
First quarter: The Hawks jumped out to a 7-0 start but the Falcons clawed back to within 1 with Karsten and Gravely hitting short jumpers. The Hawks continued to be aggressive on defense pressing the Falcons into 4 turnovers in the first to a lead 13-9. The aggressive play also saw them with early foul trouble with 7 fouls in the stanza.
Second quarter: The second saw the Falcons with a turnover to start, then a quick layup by Ron Hall. The quicker Hawks pressed the Falcons into turnovers and sharp shooting by Justin Galusha put them up 22-13 with 5 minutes left in the half. The Hawks lead was at 31-23 at halftime.
Third quarter: The third saw the Hawks move the lead to 11 points at 40-29 with 3:30 left in the quarter. The quick defense kept the pressure up with Chris gates moving in and around the falcons defense. Ben gravely kept the falcons scoring with 3 layups. The falcons continue to move the ball and get close shots to move within 3 but a 3 pointer by Kyle Washburn pushed the lead back to 6 at the buzzer 43-37.
Fourth quarter: At 5:23 in the fourth and the Hawks up 45-41, Hall fouled out after a missed free throw and left the Falcons without their main ball handler. The Hawks chose to take the air out of the ball and allowed the Falcons to come back. They continued to go inside to Karsten and Gravely to cut the deficit to 52-48, but a turnover gave the ball back to the Hawks who promptly turned it back to the Falcons. With 21 seconds the Falcons advanced the ball to the front court and called a timeout with 14 seconds. The Falcons then ran a play to Gilbert who drained a 3 with under 12 seconds and trailing 52-51. The Hawks’ Washburn calmly drained 2 free throws to ice it 54-51. The player of the game was awarded to Washburn. ITA was led by Galusha with 13 and Central Gravely with 14.
